"If I keep up this pace, I know I'll burn out, or probably just die..."
"...I want to feel good again. No more emotional rollercoaster. I don't want to be tired. There has to be a way to crush it and still be happy. People say it's possible. I can't take everyone around me higher when I feel so low. I'm not happy and I don't want to feel this way anymore. I'm taking a bunch of B vitamins and stuff. It's probably not helping, you know?"
This is the confession of one young, smart workaholic. It's the someday-I'll-take-better-care-of-myself story. Why this story? It seems almost everyone is in the middle of a dire energy crisis. And the result is something worse than burnout. So many times people get the money or whatever they've been striving for - but they're not happy. Then they make a sudden, awful decision. They quit or fail big time. And then they realize it was their own fault - their own choices. Low energy takes away almost everything important in life. You pass up challenges that used to make you feel alive. It seems everyone is passing you by. No confidence anymore. You eat worse. You get fatter. You struggle to get people to believe in you, buy from you, support you. Just like the young man above, people try all the quick fixes and fads, desperately trying to revitalize their lives. And the truth is, you probably already know some of the answers.
Hey, you don't need us to play Mom and tell you to get more sleep. Or tell you that massage and skin care will help you relax, slow down and get more energy back.
Honestly, We feel that most people forget to focus on their energy as they go about their daily lives. The good news is, you can dramatically increase your energy with one simple habit. Try it and let us know how it works for you. Why does it work? Well, power plants don't MAKE energy. They transform and transmit it. Just like your body does with thoughts and feelings. This means you don't have to wait for happiness, motivation or excitement to come along in life. Get good at this habit and you can generate positive feelings and energy on demand. When do you need to practice this habit? Whenever you're in transition...
When you wake up - the start of your day is a transition. When you start your commute to work. When you open your car door and walk in the office. When you finish a task and check your email. When you jump on a webinar. When you leave work and head to the gym. When you walk into your home and put on the Mommy/Daddy hat. Every day we have all these transitions. And if you manage them poorly... you lose so much energy, willpower and focus. Just like you'd lose heat if you were outside in your pj's, soaking wet and in the middle of a snow storm. Think about the transitions you face each day. What are they? Do you ever carry over any negative feelings from one activity to the next? Ever feel depleted, but you plow ahead without taking a break? From now on, as you move from one activity to another, try this:
- Close your eyes for a minute or two.
- Repeat the word Relax in your mind. Remind yourself and command your body to relax all the tension - in your shoulders, neck, face, jaw, back and legs. Do your best to release tense thoughts too. It may not be easy at first, but with practice, you can get better at this. Repeat the word Relax for a minute or so as you focus on relaxing.
- Now choose your purpose for your next task. How do you want to think and feel as you do this activity? How can you complete it successfully? If you wanted to enjoy the activity, how could you do that? These don't have to be the exact questions you ask yourself, but prompt yourself to be intentional here.
This is exactly what world-class athletes do to "get in the zone." They consciously focus on feeling in the zone. It's not just an emotion that happens when they need to perform. It's a choice and a carefully cultivated habit. It's when we stop being conscious of our feelings that we're getting into trouble. Practice this deliberately throughout the day as you face transitions. We think you'll be surprised at just how powerful this is for managing stress and gaining more positive energy. Don't believe this? Try it. In fact, try it right now. That's what the young workaholic did. After a few minutes of relaxing, he thought about how he wanted to walk into his home free from work and business. How he would greet his wife if he were the best husband in the world. And how he would treat his son if he really appreciated that time with him was precious. The outcome? He said...
"We just had the most wonderful evening. I'm at a loss how to describe it."
Regardless of how you work on this, the idea is to develop a habit and stick to it. Ask yourself: If I had more energy in the day, what would I do with it? Want more help with the relaxing part? Massage from an experienced therapist actually helps with anxiety and teaches you and your body to relax on demand. We think you'll be surprised at just how much massage can help you. Why not try it?
